What happened
The property sits on Kelly Jordan Road in Montague Township, northeast of Smiths Falls, Ontario: a house on about 40 acres of mostly wooded land.
In 2004, Robert Lambert bought the wooded lot. He had come to the area from the United States decades before, to be with the woman he married, Kathryn. She died in 2016. In April 2018, according to property records reported by CBC News, a man named Christopher Fenton became a co-owner of the property. Three months later, in early July 2018, Lambert, then 75, was seen for the last time. He was not reported missing to police until November 30.
Robbie Thomson
In October 2023, another man disappeared. Robbie Thomson was 34 and lived in Smiths Falls.
Two years later, on October 29, 2025, Ontario Provincial Police arrested three people and charged them with first-degree murder in Thomson’s death, even though his body had not been found: Christopher Fenton and Erin Mackie of Montague Township, and Joshua Belfiori of Kingston. The next day officers executed a search warrant at the Kelly Jordan Road property and found human remains, which were confirmed as Thomson’s. In April 2026 a fourth person was charged with being an accessory after the fact. None of the accused has been tried.
The second and third men
Police stayed. On July 20, 2026, they found a second set of remains on the property. On August 5, they identified them as Robert Lambert, the man who had bought the land 22 years earlier.
The next day, August 6, investigators found a third set of remains. On August 18, police identified them as Lawrence Bertrim, who had been 42 when he was last seen in downtown Smiths Falls at about 11 p.m. on September 30, 2022.
As of late August 2026, the causes of Lambert’s and Bertrim’s deaths had not been determined, and no one had been charged in either death. Police said they suspect foul play but could not confirm any connection between the three cases beyond the place the men were found, and would not speculate about a pattern. Officers remained at the property.
